What? He’s Really Leaving? I Don’t Believe It!

Yes, it’s true. I’m finally dragging the boat off of Ventura Reef and setting sail. I’ll be leaving the dock sometime late morning on Tuesday, March 6.

The weather for the next few days looks great. By the time the next low pressure drops our way I should be several hundred miles south where it won’t really matter. In fact, I may have too little wind the next few days. But what I do have should be out of the northwest, so I’ll be able to fly the spinnaker and maybe keep up my 125 mile per day average that I want.

I’ll try to post some pictures soon. And once I’m at sea, I’ll try to post a journal entry every day or two. The radio uses a LOT of power, and I need to conserve battery power, so I may have to be brief or infrequent.

Just so you know, this is the longest non-stop leg of the entire trip from here to Sweden. Ventura to Panama is 3,100 nautical miles. This leg will probably take me about 30 days. If I get lucky with the wind, I might make it in 25 days. On the other hand, it could take 40 days, too.

I’ve gotta get some sleep, so bye for now.

  1. I’m so glad to see that you have this website up and running, David. The last time I looked it was still waves, but has somehow managed to morph into something that looks really impressive! I really appreciate the trouble you’ve gone to in creating such a comprehensive site. The kids in my class and I will be tracking your progress all along the way. We wish you a hearty Bon Voyage!!
